The basics about the Aztecs...
History: The Aztecs began to build their capital in 1325. When they had reached their height in population growth, the empire was home to some 200,000 people. Slaves were the lowest class in the empire. Nobles were very important to the Aztec community and so was the ruler. In the 1400's the Aztecs were conquered bu the Spanish Settlers.
Geography: They centered in northern Mexico. The Aztecs searched for fertile land to grow crops all over. In 1325 they settled on a marshy island in the Lake Texacoco region. They began to build their capital Tenochtitlan, they were said to have built the biggest city in the world. They used chinampas to expand over the water to extend farming abilities. They had settled their empire between Mexico and northern Guatemaela.
Economy: As the population grew, Aztecs depended on higher levels of economic support from surrounding areas. A large number of preists and crafters lived in the main part of the city. In Tenochtitlan there was a permanent economy, so it had a large market and the begginings of economic classes. The 2 major cities Tenochtitlan & Teohuican were most of the time,at war and rarely helped each other.
Social Structure: The king/ruler was the highest position in the land. He attended to the law and any problems that the civilization might have had. Some nobles helped with taxes and helped as judges around the cites. The upper class consisted of government officials, the king, and priests. Priests led ceremonies and taught the Aztecs how to survive. Many positions were passed down from father to son. Many Aztecs did not own land on their own. Slaves were the lowest class of citizen and they struggled to survive.
